Katy Perry 'Firework' with Narrative Codes
As part of my research I am looking at well produced music videos and analysing how they are created, their narrative codes, what genres they are.
The Katy Perry 'Firework' video is a hybrid genre of narrative and performance throughout.
Also by looking at Barthes' narrative codes we can see how videos are put together and show meaning such as:
Enigma code - (setting up a puzzle and usually resolved) in Firework this is shown through the multiple narratives cutting to performance, with each character having a social problem and then by the end of the video showing a resolution. Such as the man being mugged is then stopped from being mugged.
Semic code - (connotations suggested by the characters) there are 5 people each with a problem, this is done so the audience can relate to one of them and their problem.
symbolic code - (binary opposition, telling us what we don't see) we understand that the girl fully clothed by the pool is self conscious about her body and therefore doesn't want to take her clothes off.
By researching videos like this, I can see how meaning and narrative can be represented through Barthes' codes and also how audiences are targeted and are made to want to watch the videos, for example being able to relate to the video and song such as in 'Firework'.

U2 at Glastonbury 2011, performing 'I Will Follow'
As part of my research I am looking at well produced music videos or videos of festivals and how camera angles, shots and the target audience is addressed to make a good video for when I make my own.
This video is of U2 performing at Glastonbury 2011, it is produced by the BBC and their main target audience was those people who would have liked to have gone to the festival but were unable to. Therefore the camera angles and shots are to give the target audience the atmosphere and experience had they been at Glastonbury.
At the start of the video they introduce each band member individually in the sequence they start to perform in, each shot of the band member is a low angle, this shows the band from the audiences perspective but also shows the band as iconic impressive rock stars.
At 1.12 there is a shot of the mass crowd and stage which then cuts to two members of the audience at 1.17, by doing this they are giving the audience at home the collective mass audience atmosphere from the extreme long shot and they by cutting to the two audience members showing an individuals experience too. Something that the target audience can relate too, almost reminding them of what festivals are like so they feel partly there.
As the tempo changes to a slower beat the editing reflected this, there were transition shots and shots were overlaid one another to represent the tempo.
The ending shot is the same as the establishing shot of an extreme long shot of the whole of Glastonbury, this shot may have been last to remind the target audience that they are at Glastonbury and the enormity of it.
